Listening

As people and actors,  we sometimes find ourselves listening but waiting for our chance to reply or say our lines.   We should be listening with the intent to understand.

Listening can show who we really are as a person or character.   Are we listening with kindness, empathy, frustration, rage, could we care less?  How are we representing ourselves as a person or character when we listen?

Being in the moment of listening allows a person to connect to the speaker and others in the room.

Sometimes a listener may feel less important than the speaker, but in actuality, it may be the speaker who needs recognition.  The simple act of listening gives us the opportunity to validate emotions and someone who may be in need.  How great is that?

In summary,  listening is an important part in personal relationships and acting.  As a person and actor,  it is important to remember that listening is just as important as what you say or the lines you speak - and may be more important.  Listen intently and genuinely. Your friends and camera will love you for it.

Self Challenge:  Talk less/listen more.  Try being silent for a set amount of time (10 minutes, 1 hour, 3 days... ?  You choose).   When you feel the urge to speak, ask yourself whether your input will be valuable.  Contemplate what you hear.  Does your silence validate the other person?  In your silence have you developed any new worthwhile solutions or revelations about yourself, others, the situation your are in?
